Safe Under His Wings

“He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭91:4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

I think I am an insecure person. I know what it feels to be lacking due to my early childhood when we just don’t have much to spend. This childhood upbringing unconsciously shaped my mind and habit as I grow older, similar to what this interesting article suggests. Hence, I was desperate to maximise my comfort and security through looking ways to make money. I thought that by ensuring I have enough in my bank account, then I could be glad and have an everlasting happiness. Now as I reflect back, I am in a better position than my childhood situation. However, this does not mean that I am more secure than I ever was. No, because what I have in bank account does not automatically settle all insecureness in me.

Insecurity teaches me that material possession does not suffice to satisfy our heart. Like a sheep, we long for comfort and protection as we are weak. Only a good shepherd can afford to provide those to us. A good shepherd who knows us intimately and understands exactly what we need. A shepherd that carries His weak sheep in the embrace of His strong arms. That shepherd is Jesus. He is the shepherd who is willing to sacrifice His life to save the lost sheep (John 10:11).

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! Matthew 23:37 ESV

His good protection is also likened to a hen’s wings. We are safe under His wings. Just like a hen protects her children under the covering of her wings, God protects us from danger under the shadow of His presence. It is important to remember that Jesus is not only able to protect us, but He is willing. Jesus lamented how many times He would like to gather Jerusalem under His protection. It still apply for us today. He misses to be able to gather us under His protection, to be able to shield us from the evil. No place is safer than this, where we could sit beneath the shade of His magnificence. His protection is something that we could count on, as His covering is constant. No matter how big or small our trials may be, He will surely guard us. How should we grateful that we have the Lord of Universe protecting us.

This is the real prosperity, where we have security under the protection of the Almighty. A man may have many riches, but it does not guarantee the safety of his soul (Luke 12). A lot of money may be able to purchase the best and latest medical treatment, but who can make sure that money can sustain the longevity of his soul? Prosperity is not about what we have in material form, it is about what we have in our heart. A joyful and thankful heart is the hallmark of prosperous heart. We have what we need and thus we can be thankful, because we know God provides for us. This contentment is far better than having so much money, but cannot at rest. A life that always under a constant worry that our riches might be lost only leads to wanting for more riches. True prosperity is when our heart can be glad with what we have in God.

This is a great blessing that we have. Not only that we have assurance of salvation, but also the certainty of protection from God. This happens when we put the fear of God back into its place. Fear of God is a position when we put our best respect reserved for God alone. A respect that is reasonable. A reverence due to God’s greatness and glorious nature. Whatever we do or think is based upon one fundamental truth that God exists and He is here in our life. Then we may see that He is real and is actually care for us. When we fear God, our mind starts to be enlightened about knowing God (Proverbs 1:7). A knowledge of His character and love for us starts to appear. This what makes both fear and comfort possible to reside in our heart at the same time. We have a fear of God but also so feel so secure in Him. Oh, how beautiful that feeling is!
